COVID-19 - Current information on the new coronavirus

At the end of December 2019, pneumonia occurred in large numbers in the Chinese city of Wuhan. On January 7, 2020, a new type of coronavirus was finally identified as the causative agent. The virus can be transmitted from person to person and is related to the SARS virus, which led to a pandemic in 2002.

In February 2020, a panel of experts proposed the pathogen name SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2). The World Health Organization has established the official name COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019) for the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2.
