Sino-German Summer School at the University of Lübeck

September 3, 2018: Sino-German Summer School "Structural Biology in Infection"

Monday, 03. September 2018

From August 26 to 31, 2018, the first German-Chinese Summer School on "Structural Biology in Infection" took place in Lübeck. It was organized by the National Institute for Viral Disease Control and Prevention (IVDC), China CDC, the University of Lübeck and the Heinrich Pette Institute, Leibniz Institute for Experimental Virology.

A total of 25 doctoral and postdoctoral students participated in the Summer School at the University of Lübeck. Of these, 15 young scientists came from China and ten from Germany.

In addition to numerous lectures, the participants received practical introductions to state-of-the-art technologies like next-generation sequencing or cryo-electron microscopy. Opportunities for further exchange included a "Meet the PI" meeting, various journal clubs as well as an excursion to the Centre for Structural Systems Biology (CSSB) in Hamburg, where a joint barbecue was held.

Four of a total of 15 lecturers came from China. Among them were renowned IVDC scientists such as Prof. Shiwen Wang, who reported on the epidemiology of viral diseases in China, and Prof. Zhaojun Duan, who gave an introduction into next-generation sequencing.

Other speakers came from the Heinrich Pette Institute, the University of Lübeck, the University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf and the Research Center Borstel. Their presentations ranged from the global challenges of avian influenza, the development of vaccines against new and recurrent diseases such as MERS and Ebola, until latest findings in tuberculosis research.

Following the Summer School in Lübeck, the second German-Chinese symposium "Globalization - Challenge and Response for Infectious Diseases" (Sep 1- Sep 9, 2018) will take place in Hamburg, in which the young scientists of the Summer School will also participate.
