At the end of December 2019, pneumonia occurred in large numbers in the Chinese city of Wuhan. On January 7, 2020, a new type of coronavirus was finally identified as the causative agent. The virus can be transmitted from person to person and is related to the SARS virus, which led to a pandemic in 2002.

In February 2020, a panel of experts proposed the pathogen name SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2). The World Health Organization has established the official name COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019) for the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2.

The Federal Foreign Office and the Standing Committee for Travel Medicine of the German Society for Tropical Medicine and Global Health recommend that all travellers should be vaccinated against influenza in the current 2019/2020 season. The symptoms of both infections may be similar. The vaccination can avoid unnecessary suspicious cases.
