Mission and Vision

As a Leibniz Institute, the HPI is a subject-focused research institute of national standing. The institute’s socio-political and scientific mission embodies basic and applied research in the field of human pathogenic viruses. The institute’s mission statement sets forth:
"The Heinrich Pette Institute, Leibniz Institute for Experimental Virology (HPI), investigates the biology of human pathogenic viruses. It is our aim to unravel the molecular mechanisms that control viral life cycles and virus induced pathogenesis. This research will provide novel targets and therapeutic approaches for established and emerging viral disease."

Scientific investigations are organized into main subject areas within two program areas.
