Centre for Structural Systems Biology (CSSB)

Since 2008, the HPI and the University of Hamburg (UHH) have been involved in the construction of the Centre for Structural Systems Biology (CSSB) located on the science campus in Bahrenfeld, a district of Hamburg.

At the interdisciplinary research center scientists from ten different university and non-university institutions work together, investigating complex processes and interactions between pathogens and their hosts and discovering targets for novel active substances, anti-infectives and vaccines. The new CSSB building is located next to the PETRA III experimental hall on the Bahrenfeld campus, giving CSSB scientists access to light and X-ray sources (FLASH, the European XFEL), thereby offering a unique setting for structural and systems biology in Europe.

The HPI established a CSSB research department that secures its access to studies in systems and structural biology. This new and unique link between basic experimental research in molecular virology and highly engineered structural and systems virology will provide HPI researchers with a completely new insight into the molecular cause of viral diseases. At the same time it offers new approaches to holistically analyse therapeutic measures within these systems at an extremely high spatial and temporal resolution.
